What is 52nd Street?

New York's legendary 52nd Street between Fifth Avenue and Seventh Avenue was renowned in the mid-20th century for the abundance of jazz clubs and lively street life. Musicians who played for others in the early evenings played for themselves on 52nd Street. Many jazz legends honed their talents and learned their craft. Typically a house band would play the first set and then other musicians were invited to join in and jam, sharing their music.
